You can enroll for medical assisting training in MD through two career programs offered at Harford Community College.

Certificate: This is a short-term program that requires a completion of just 39-credit coursework. It includes entire clinical and administrative procedures required to perform at patient care centers.

Associate: This is a longer program which can be completed in four semesters (2 years) and requires completion of 60-credit coursework. You also have an option to complete this degree in 15 months (includes a summer session).

*Both programs will prepare you for entry-level employment and make you eligible to take the CMA and RMA exam.

In the state of Maryland, Fortis offers medical assisting education with a combination of classroom lectures and hands-on training at its campus in Towson, located near Baltimore and Ellicott City. Anne Arundel Community College offers a range of health education programs. The college offers two options for medical assisting students.

Certificate: This is a 31-credit hour program which is classified into a prerequisite and three terms. The third and final term includes a professional seminar and a 160-hour of MA internship. You can complete this course in one year.

A.A.S. Degree: This is a 2-year course that requires a completion of 60 credit hours. It is a sequential course and you will need to complete the certificate program before receiving additional general education courses included in this program.

Purdue University Global offers a 57-credit med assisting certificate program which can be completed in just 40 weeks. There are multiple start dates, usually once every month, when you can enroll for this program. Along with the highest standards of education, PUG also provides financial aid to students. Upon completion of this program, you will be eligible to take four national certification exams – RMA, NCMA, CCMA, and CMAC.

The medical assistant degree offered at Allegany College of Maryland is a two-year long career program. The coursework is divided into four semesters and requires completion of 60 credit hours. Thereafter, you will also undergo an unpaid and supervised 220-hour clinical practicum. Upon graduation, you can sit for national certification exam and boost your employment opportunities.

Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) offers a certificate program for aspiring medical assistants. The coursework is classified into four modules which requires 652 hours of theoretical and practical training. Typically, the course can be completed in 11 months, but actual program duration can run up to 13 months, depending upon the session you opt for. Usually day sessions can be completed faster compared to the weekend or evening sessions.

• The daytime program offered at CCBC Hunt Valley campus begins in July.

• Evening or weekend program offered at CCBC Randallstown campus starts in October.

• At CCBC Essex campus the daytime course starts in October and weekend or evening course starts in February.

At Cecil College, you can enroll for a 900-hour medical assistant certificate course which also includes 160 hours of unpaid clinical practicum. The coursework trains you with all types of clinical and administrative skills required to assist physicians in an ambulatory or patient care setting. You can complete this course in 36 weeks and upon graduation, you will be able to take the CMA exam. After successful clearance of the CMA exam, Cecil College will reward you with 12 credits towards the associate of healthcare science degree.
