Eastern New Mexico University provides a 3-semester medical assisting certificate of occupational training program at its Roswell campus in New Mexico. This 41.5-credit program starts every fall and includes a 5-credit clinical externship that takes place in the summer session at a local physician’s office. This 40-week course will train you to effectively perform administrative and clinical duties, required to efficiently discharge your duties as a medical assistant.. Upon graduation, you will also be eligible to take the CMA exam and increase your employment opportunities.

Santa Fe Community College (SFCC) offers two career centric programs in medical assisting.

Certificate: This is a 34.25-credit program which focuses only on core med assisting coursework.

A.A.S. Degree: This is a 62.5-credit program which includes entire coursework of certificate program and additional advanced courses.

Both the programs will prepare you for entry-level positions in healthcare settings and upon graduation, you will also be eligible to take certification exams or further your studies.

Pima Medical Institute (PMI) gives you a wonderful opportunity to pursue med assisting training at its Albuquerque campus in NM. This 34-credit training is a combination of 325-hour theoretical classes, 275-hour lab training, and 200-hour clinical externship. The coursework includes, but not limited to, examination methods, medical billing and coding aspects, surgical procedures and medical office lab procedures. Upon graduation, you can sit for the national certification examand become a certified medical assistant.

Brookline College offers a 720-hour medical assisting program which enables you to earn a total of 31.5 credits in approximately 39 weeks. This is an 8-module coursework which includes, but not limited to, healthcare concepts, administrative procedures, clinical practices, lab training, pharmacology, electrocardiography and a 160-hour MA externship. Upon completion of this program, you will be fully prepared to take certification exam and hunt for entry-level job positions in urgent care setting or other healthcare facilities.

National American University (NAU) at its Albuquerque (East and West) campuses in New Mexico offers a 104-week med administrative assistant program which precisely focuses on imparting clerical duties required to successfully manage a medical office.

The core coursework includes med law, record management, and healthcare coding. You may be required to attend classes at different locations, and you will also be required to take some classes online.

Charter College (CC) offers 10-month medical assistant training which starts every 5 weeks at its Farmington campus in New Mexico. The training mainly focuses on imparting technical, clinical and clerical knowledge required to perform medical assisting duties at a physician’s office or ambulatory setting. The coursework also includes a 180-hour externship in clinical setting.

In order to graduate, you must either clear, or at least attempt a national certification exam a minimum of two times. If you fail to clear or attempt a national certification exam a minimum of two times then you will not be considered a graduate but still be able to complete the program. If you failed to clear certification exam on the first attempt, you can still continue your clinical externship and hone your MA skills. CC also sponsors students who take national examination through NCCT.
